ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION TRANSFORMERS

The distribution transformer is part of the production line at ECS. It plays a crucial role in efficiently stepping down high voltage electricity to a lower voltage level, ensuring safe and reliable power distribution for various applications.

As a leading manufacturer of electrical switchgear and distribution panels in Uganda, ECS was contracted by Schneider Electric to produce a range of distribution transformers with ratings of 150kVA, 33/0.42kV, and 0.5MVA, 33/0.42kV. These transformers exemplify ECS’s commitment to delivering high-quality electrical components for contemporary energy projects.

We pride ourselves on having the country’s leading transformer manufacturing facility. With cutting-edge technology, optimized processes, and a highly skilled team, we deliver transformers engineered for exceptional durability and minimal maintenance, ensuring long-term reliability and performance.

Transformer manufacturing process

  1. Design and Engineering:
  • This initial phase involves analyzing customer specifications, including voltage, power rating, frequency, and cooling requirements.
  • Engineers create detailed designs and blueprints for the transformer.
  1. Core Manufacturing:
  • The core, which carries the magnetic flux, is typically made of laminated steel sheets.
  • These sheets are precisely cut, shaped, and stacked to minimize energy loss.
  • The quality of the core significantly impacts the transformer’s efficiency.
  1. Winding Manufacturing:
  • Primary and secondary windings are created using copper or aluminum wire.
  • The number of turns and wire size are carefully calculated to achieve the desired voltage ratio.
  • Insulation is crucial to prevent electrical breakdown between windings.
  1. Insulation and Assembly:
  • Insulation materials like paper, pressboard, or specialized resins are used to insulate the windings and core.
  • The windings are carefully assembled onto the core, ensuring proper alignment and spacing.
  1. Tank Fabrication and Transformer Oil:
  • The transformer tank, typically made of steel, provides structural support and houses the core and windings.
  • The tank is fabricated, cleaned, and treated to prevent corrosion.
  • Transformer oil, a specialized mineral oil, is used for insulation and cooling within the tank.
  1. Testing and Quality Control:
  • Rigorous tests are conducted to ensure the transformer’s performance and reliability.
  • These tests include insulation resistance tests, dielectric strength tests, turns ratio tests, temperature rise tests and short-circuit tests
  • Quality control measures are implemented throughout the entire manufacturing process.
